Forecasts and Faith: Can You Believe Beyond What You See?
And sometimes that moment takes a while.
The morning after my Safeway run, I woke up to… nothing. Not a single snowflake. For a moment, I doubted. Maybe that seemingly clueless woman knew more than the meteorologists.
A quick check of the news revealed the weather forecast still called for snow. And hours later, as promised, the snow came.
Some of you may have some pretty intelligent faith. You may realize that it’s not wise to judge tomorrow solely on what you see today. However, you may be standing in a new day in a new year, and seeing the situation unchanged, wonder whether it will ever happen. You may feel your faith slipping away.
Recently I was feeling frustrated about something. I felt like there was no way out. Moments later I got an e-mail full of press clips at work. The dateline on the very first one was Nineveh. That’s a pretty uncommon name. Apparently it’s a city in Indiana, but most of us know it as the place God commanded the prophet Jonah to go and preach. Jonah did not want to go there and fled from God. Jonah’s disobedience later landed him in the belly of a whale for three days and three nights until he decided to go where God had commanded. (Jonah 1-4)
In that moment, God reminded me that I have not exactly been faithful in the things He has commanded me to do. Sometimes I’m downright disobedient and other times I only get the job half-done. But what if my breakthrough is tied to pursuing what God originally placed on my heart? Maybe I’m frustrated because I didn’t give my all to something that would have made all the difference in the world?
If you’ve been waiting, perhaps it’s time for a check-in. Go back to God to see if the forecast remains the same. Then consider whether you have any unfinished business that He is waiting for you to handle. Finally, when you have received your confirmation and done as He commanded you to do, you can relax and wait on the promise.
As imperfect beings, we all have ditzy moments. The intelligent among us may have periods of doubt. But the faithful have learned to trust the forecast in spite of present conditions, and the mature have learned to assess whether they have put the necessary action behind their faith.
What’s in the forecast for you? Will you believe even if today’s circumstances suggest otherwise? Have you done your part in bringing it to pass?
